Welcome to Part 1 of September’s focus inside The Simplified Year! As a perfect segue from August’s money theme, this week we’re taking a hard look at the digital space that costs us money every month — the paid digital storage we accumulate and often forget.

Quick overview: Many of us subscribe to cloud storage plans because our devices fill up fast and we don’t want our devices to stop functioning properly, even for a minute - especially at an inconvenient time. But what happens when we store everything, without intention or curation? This week, we start the process of reclaiming control over what we actually need to keep, freeing up both digital space and mental bandwidth… and eventually our money, too.

How are you doing with this? Have you ever stopped to ask yourself: What am I really paying for when it comes to digital storage? Is it all necessary? Or is it a collection of digital “junk drawers” you don’t often visit?

This Week’s Focus: Paid Digital Storage

Whether it’s iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, or other services, most of us have subscribed to paid digital storage at some point. The promise is clear: “Keep all your photos, documents, and files safe in the cloud, accessible anytime.”

But the truth is paid storage is only valuable if what you keep there is of value. Otherwise, it’s just another monthly expense silently draining your resources while cluttering up your digital life.

We tend to hoard photos “just in case,” save duplicate files, keep old projects, and rarely prune. It’s no surprise then that the result is an overstuffed digital closet that feels overwhelming, costs money, and steals so much time when we need to find something quickly.

Why This Matters (Mindset Reset)

Think about the cost of paying for digital storage month after month. It’s real money — often small, but persistent - but more than that, it’s mental weight. Every file or photo you keep “just in case” adds invisible clutter to your mind and your systems. It’s a mental to-do list that you can’t see, but you know it’s there.

Our digital environments should be sacred places of clarity and ease, not labyrinths of frustration. The digital age should be serving us; saving us time, taking some of the load off, and consolidating our lives - not adding to our overwhelm and frustration.

There’s also sustainability to think about. Digital storage servers consume energy. By decluttering your digital footprint, you’re also contributing to reducing unnecessary energy use globally. It’s a small but meaningful act of care for our planet.

Recognize that a subscription to digital storage is a resource, and resources need respect and stewardship to be maximized but not abused. Intentional use is how we are meant to operate, rather than draining every resource. Reclaim space for what truly matters digitally, just as you do in your physical world.
